The Power of Voice

At the recent Academy of Country Music awards, Carrie Underwood sang a “Walk This Way” duet with Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler. What a contrast, you know? Young, blonde, beautiful, seemingly innocent Carrie Underwood jamming with long time, hard core rocker from the ‘70s, known for his drug abuse, partying and sexual exploits. They sang Aerosmith’s most famous song, “Walk This Way?” Pardon me while I post the lyrics. backstroke lover always hidin’ ‘neath the covers till I talked to your daddy, he say he said “you ain’t seen nothin’ till you’re down on a muffin then you’re sure to be a-changin’ your ways” I met a cheerleader, was a real young bleeder oh, the times I could reminisce ’cause the best things of lovin’ with her sister and her cousin only […]

A Love Affair with Your Writing Dream, Part Four: Keep the Love Alive

For decades I’ve counseled with couples who started off their relationship with a flame as hot as lava in a volcano. Time and neglect cooled the fire, until all that remained was a few embers begging for a breath of air to fan the flame that long ago flickered out. It’s sad, really, especially when it doesn’t have to happen. Scientists say our sun will eventually burn out and there’s nothing we can do about it. I don’t know whether that’s true but I do know that our love is a choice and we have complete control over whether the flame burns bright or is extinguished altogether. Drop and Give Me Twenty! Okay, One.

All right, writers. I’m going to say a word most of you will hate: exercise. Yeah, I know, the excuses are long and many. “I hate it.” “I don’t have time for it.” “It’s too cold.” “It’s too hot.” “My legs hurt. My arms…” “I sprained my eyelashes.” Okay, I get it. But as writers, we need to take care of our bodies as much as our hearts and minds. Sitting all day is hard on writer. A few years ago I realized my entire body hurt. I was starting to think I was going to have to life with pain in my shoulders, hips and back the rest of my writing life. While I wasn’t happy about it, I wasn’t sure what to do. Other than hot baths. And […]

A Love Affair with Your Writing Dream, Part Three: Dance the Night Away!

I used to love going to the barn dances at the end of the harvest season. Everyone had worked hard to harvest the crops. The cattle had been driven to market and the year was coming to an end. The nip in the air signaled the end of one very long, back-breaking season. It was time to let our hair down and enjoy the fruits of our labor. A country music band (sorry, I’m from Texas) played Cotton Eyed Joe while we did the Texas Two Step. We laughed and retold stories of comedy and calamity the year had brought. We rekindled relationships that had flickered during the season, separated by miles of cattle country. All too soon for any of us, the night came to an end. We’d literally […]
