Fabulous Friday Fiction: Reverse Santa Clause

What if….what if Santa really did give out coal?  Or worse…what if he took things away? I remember one Christmas, back in my rebellious teenage years, when my parents, furious at me, took my presents away for a day after Christmas, just to teach me to be grateful.  True Story.  I deserved it, I promise.  They had the guts to teach me about gratitude and it sunk in. I’m extremely grateful for the many, many gifts God has blessed me with over the years, especially the MBT Voices, and those who read this blog and my novels. I’m also very blessed to help aspiring novelists develop their stories as a writing coach.  Often, I will endorse these books when they are published.  Sometimes I even review them on my blog. And sometimes, […]

Avoiding the Rory Gilmore Syndrome

I love the TV show Gilmore Girls. The writers created such a fantastic story world with Stars Hollow and powered it all with quirky, fast-talking, beautiful Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. But the writers fell into a characterization hole, IMHO, when Rory became too-perfect-to-live. Too good to be true. Every man and his brother, every girl and her sister loved Rory. All who met her believed she hung the moon, stars and visited the Sombrero galaxy while stirring brownie mix for pale-skinned orphans. She was smart. She was beautiful. She was quick and engaging, a repartee’s repartee. She was kind and giving, her mother’s best friend. The girl next door, the one to take home to mom, and dad. She couldn’t golf or run fast, but who cared? What an endearing […]

Fabulous Read by our own Lisa Jordan! Lakeside Reunion

Susie here:  I admit that I am rather picky about the books I read for enjoyment. I read so much that a book has to wrap me up in its world and whisk me away into the characters lives for me to enjoy it. I know it’s a great book when I stop editing and just savor. I did exactly this with Lisa Jordan’s debut novel, Lakeside Reunion.  It was absolutely fabulous.  From a storycrafting perspective, she nailed it.  The plot is perfectly paced, the tension delicious, the scenes rich with conflict, the romance spot on.  She even writes and amazing kiss!  And the wordsmithing – oh, the storyworld in this book is rich and adeptly painted, the dialogue crisp, the sentences active and vivid.   As a My Book Therapist, this story […]

Friday Fiction: Baby it’s cold outside

Dottie Morgan has no desire to share her home – or her heart – over Christmas. After all, her Christmas spirit froze over when Dottie lost her son in World War 2. But when a blizzard of the decade traps Dottie in her home with four near strangers, she just might discover that opening her door just might open her heart a Christmas miracle…and a new reason celebrate Christmas. Behind the Pages: The idea of a book that took place in a Storm House simmered in my mind for the better part of two years. I came upon the concept while walking with an older friend in our small town. She pointed out an old house on the corner, one that looked like it might have grown there, with the […]
