This time last year I shared with you my discovery of the social media manager, Tweetdeck (www.tweetdeck.com). I was thrilled with its versatility and all the options it offered. Fast forward to this year and Twitter has since acquired Tweetdeck and my love affair with this program has waned. It no longer offers many of the options that helped me organize and manage my social networking. Here are just a few that have gone missing. •The ability to copy and paste something into updates. •The general ease of navigation that made this program so simple. •The live timeline that pops up no matter what you’re working on. •The easy interface between Tweetdeck and Facebook. Because of these changes I’ve switched programs and now use Hootsuite (www.hootsuite.com) almost exclusively. There are drawbacks to Hootsuite, but now I […]

Changes to Tweetdeck or Why I Moved to Hootsuite

Get Your Twitter On!
I’ve already posted on how to utilize Twitter and Tweetdeck on this blog so today I want to talk about how to Tweet effectively. As Twitter has gained popularity it’s become harder to stand out in the crowd. But with a little Twitter Tweaking, you can encourage new folks to visit your site. First, and MOST IMPORTANT, utilize hashtags. A hashtag (#) makes the letters following it searchable within the Twitter universe—even if the person searching doesn’t follow you. For example, when I tweet about My Book Therapy I utilize two hastags—#write and #MyBookTherapy. Important Note: When you space, the hashtag ends. That’s why I wrote out #MyBookTherapy with NO spaces. Second, be creative when you compose your tweets. Avoid the tired old tweet, “Check out my newest blog post.” […]

I know a lot of you are fed up with Facebook. But it’s important to realize that even though there are new options on the social media frontier, most of your fans are still on Facebook. That said, there’s a new player in the game and many believe it’s going to become a major player. Because of this, I’m giving you some of the basics of how to get started with Google Plus. Personally, I really like what I’m seeing with Google+. The developers have addressed many of the more irritating issues about Facebook and the fan base for Google+ is growing exponentially. So let’s get started! First, go to https://plus.google.com/ to sign up, or view your account. Once there, you need to fill in your profile. Most important—upload a […]

As I’ve mentioned before, a landing page is a critical component for a successful Facebook fan page. Although you may have to invest a couple of hours, it’s well worth the effort. There are several different place you can go to develop your page. The two I’ve found easiest are Wix (www.wix.com) and Pagemodo (http://www.pagemodo.com/?r=free_footer). Both of these offer free and subscription based options. I used Wix for my author landing page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Edie-Melson/212307145501921?sk=wall) and Pagemodo for the landing page for Fighting Fear: Winning the War at Home (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fighting-Fear-Winning-the-War-at-Home/210008849071555?sk=wall). I wanted the opportunity to try out both and see if one offered a better product than the other. You can visit both pages and see for yourself the two different looks they offered. I found them to be very […]
