One Thing Marketing: Marketing Before You’re Published Part 1

So I kind of love the Allstate Mayhem commercials. You’ve seen them right? They’re hilarious, and the goal: to get you all prepared and insured before mayhem strikes. Well, let’s replace mayhem with a book contract and insurance with a super sweet platform and marketing strategy, and we’ve got our topic for today and the next few weeks: Marketing Before You’re Contracted. If you’re serious about a career as a published author, then the sooner you get started on the marketing piece of your journey, the further ahead you are…and the more attractive you are to agents and editors. So in the next few weeks, we’re going to talk about some incredibly practical steps you can take to start marketing now. Over three weeks, we’ll look at a total of […]

One Thing Marketing: What marketing is…and isn’t.

So, February is sort of a lovey-dovey month with Valentine’s Day and all, so it’s only fitting we continue talking about something I love: author marketing. (If you just groaned at those two words, no worries. You’re normal. I’m the weird one.) But here’s the thing, marketing doesn’t have to be a moan-inducing. It can even be, get this, fun. The key is understanding what good marketing is…and isn’t. For the rest of our Tuesdays in February, we’re going to talk about some very practical tips for marketing your book (and you!)…even before you’re contracted. One Thing Marketing: The Three Bs—Buy In!

For the past couple weeks, we’ve been talking about the Three Bs of marketing: 1)      Brand 2)      Bio 3)      Buy-in  We focused on “brand” two weeks ago and “bio” last week. Today’s topic: Buy-in. It’s possible I may or may not have picked the term “buy-in” solely so it’d fit into the alliteration. 😀  But I think it works. When we buy in to something—an idea or a product—we’re giving it our support. We’re agreeing to do something. So in all of your marketing efforts—online, in print or in person—you should have a clear idea of what you’re asking the audience or the reader to do. Sometimes the buy-in will be obvious. For instance, if someone visits your Facebook author page, obviously you want them to “like” the page. But there can be […]

One Thing Marketing: The Three Bs—BIO

Last week, we began talking about the Three Bs of marketing:   1)      Brand 2)      Bio 3)      Buy-in   We specifically focused on “brand” last week. Today we’re going to talk about bio…what you say about, well, you! This might sound like a silly thing to even need to talk about. And there are many helpful blog posts and articles out there with in-depth information on how to write an author bio. My main point is this: Don’t forget to include it! Honestly, I’ve been to so many blogs and websites that looked really cool…but whose writers were like cyber-ghosts because their bio was either hidden…or nonexistent. In all your marketing efforts—online, in print or in person—it’s important people know the basics about you. Think of it like this: If someone picks up […]
