It’s long been a dream of mine to walk into a Walmart somewhere in America and find one of my books on the shelf. Not in the bulk pile, but on the shelf next to my favorite authors like Karen Kingsbury and Ted Dekker…. And it happened yesterday. There I was, browsing the Palm Bay Wally World for suntan oil and WHALLA! There was cute Rafe looking at me from the top shelf! I did a happy dance right then (although managed to refrain from grabbing passing shoppers to share in my joy!) Rachel took a picture of happy me and Cute Rafe together in Walmart. Yes, I Promise we WILL start blogging again about writing. It’s just so hard to concentrate on something serious with all this sunshine, ocean […]

Rachel and Susie at Cocoa Beach!
Hey all ~ Here’s a pix of Rachel and I strolling Cocoa Beach — sadly, of course, we were…brainstorming a book! We’re such addicts! Which is why I nearly stepped on a jellyfish. (They’re these cool little see-through disks, like a blob, on the sand…I said, “Hey Rach, look — ” and stuck my bare toe out to nudge it and she nearly threw me over her shoulder and took off in a run!) We hashed out her new book, and then worked on one of my scenes. We always start out with one easy word…WHY. It’s a great way to get to the heart of the story. Hope you all are having a great week! I’d come downstairs from my office and discover her at three in the afternoon, in her bathroom and Superman pants, digging through the fridge. She’d swoon and say, Oh, Clark is sooooo cute. I thought — hey, this isn’t a super productive way to spend your summer… until she sent me this devotional she wrote before she left again for camp. She’s 16, but I like the way she thinks. Here […]

I’m so excited to announce that my NEW COLUMN with the Christian Fiction Online Magazine is up! It’s called From the Big Screen to Your Scene, and takes popular movies and teaches writing techniques from it…. Here’s a sample from this month’s issue…. Can you hear it? August Rush Asks a Question Listen, can you hear it? The music. I can hear it everywhere. In the wind; In the air; In the light; It’s all around us. All you have to do is open yourself up; All you have to do is listen. These are the opening lines of last fall’s delightful movie, August Rush, delivered in the haunting, delicate voice of amazing young actor Freddie Highmore. The story opens with young Evan, a so-called orphan, leading a symphony […]
