I hope you’re already dreaming up an inciting incident for your favorite premise! I know I am. But before we do that, we need to know who our characters are. Yesterday, I outlined the hero and heroine of the Talk Show Host and the Teacher. Today, let’s take a look at the Actress and the Park Ranger Who is our Actress? Our Actress has worked hard to get where she is. She was a good girl, a hard worker growing up, and her parents put her through school. She moved to Hollywood to follow her dream, and was an overnight success. She married an A-list star and life seemed to be going her direction…until she decided to make an indy film exposing the flesh-for-sale industry overseas…and the […]

Background on the Actress and the Park Ranger
A little background on the Talk Show Host and the Teacher
So, maybe it would help you know which way to vote if you knew who you were vote for. Here’s a bit of Background on our characters, using the simple WHO method for developing all the key pieces: Talk Show Host Who is she? She’s a foster child with a fractured past, always inventing herself. Always tried to be all things to all people. She never wants attention for herself, so she’s good at stepping outside herself, and highlights other people. She doesn’t know who she is, so it’s hard to be true to herself. She is only confident as an interviewer and celebrity. She has the way of getting the true story out of people. Exposing the lies. Combo of Geraldo and Oprah. But she really doesn’t know who […]

One thing I love about writing stories, is that regardless of the similar plots there, everyone has their own take on life, story, theme, etc. So many incredible VOICES in Club Book Therapy. Rachel and I spent the morning collecting all the ideas, sifting them together and trying to incorporate as many as we could to develop story ideas that we could possibly write! Recapping, you picked the Everyday Hero, and the Celebrity, (which I love). Some of the riveting ideas/themes were: Military guy-turned-Park Ranger, Celebrity being chased by Paparazzi, Previous Missionary turned Photographer, carrying dark secrets, Museum curator, Singer who did a USO tour, War in Iraq, town secrets, person connected to hero who died in the past….and the list goes on. I wasn’t easy, let me tell you, […]

Or, at least a celebrity! Great job, Voices in picking a Heroine for our Romantic-Suspense Blog-a-Book. I love the sparks of an everyday hero falling for a well-known (and beautiful, no doubt) woman. Can anyone say Notting Hill? Yay! There’s been some riveting discussion on both our Hero and Heroine over on the VOICES forum…one in particular really nailed the questions before us: >>>The word Celebrity usually comes with negative connotation, because of the lifestyle we often hear about in the news or magazines…. but what if she is a strong Christian who grew up in East Tennessee and moved to L.A., N.Y. or Vancouver (there is film industry there as well). She is still the same person, but our hero doesn’t want anything to do with a “High maintenance” […]
