A Marketing Perspective on Children’s Books

Every author, no matter what market you write for, must consider marketing. That’s why we’ll take some time to look at this perspective and what you need to know to prepare for this crucial part. Tommy Nelson is the children’s division of Thomas Nelson. They publish Bible Storybooks, Board Books, and fiction for kids and tweens, and YA non-fiction. They also have several branded lines of products including Hermie, Veggie Tales, Bibleman and Adventures in Odyssey. YA Fiction is handled by the Thomas Nelson Fiction team. Thomas Nelson has been around since 1798. Go ahead, pause and take that in for a minute. 1798, people. They seek to be a source of light and inspire the world. Pretty awesome goals. As promised, the “The Proposal” moment!

Last time I blogged I talked about finding my “anchors” for the story that allowed me to go deeper with the characters and the plot. As I worked through the middle part of the book, I came out of my office and said to my husband, “I need a “The Proposal” moment!” “Like??” he said. “You know when Margaret (Sandra Bullock) is trying to convince Drew (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her and they are standing out on the sidewalk?” “Yes…” “And she tells him, if you don’t marry me, I’ll be deported. There are some components of this story that are just hard for me. I’ve never been a cooking show host. Never even been on TV. Well, once, when I was five, on a Tulsa kiddy show. I kept changing seats with the kid next to me. Or was she the one moving all around? Focus! Focus! Anyway, I remained on the surface of the story […]

Brainstorming Craziness

I decided to take a week to writer and pray in Kansas City at the International House of Prayer. I have some friends here and thought a change of pace and setting would be inspiring. Plus. I wanted to be in an atmosphere where people prayed 24×7. Church, we do not pray enough. Seriously. I’ll be first in line to say, “I need to pray more.” I wanted to accomplish a good bit of writing and have learned some lessons about get-a-way writing retreats. More on that later. Wednesday, I was stuck. So stuck, I was starting to be worried and bothered. My last two books, I managed NOT to lose any sleep and was believing I’d broken through into a new place of confidence in my writing. But, when […]
