Yesterday, we talked about Point of View, and started a discussion over on Voices. Be sure to let us know if you have any POV questions. To recap, point of view refers to the character “telling” the story. We can only know what he/she sees, hears and feels. If the story is being told in first person, then the protagonist does most of the talking. 🙂 A story can have more than one POV in first person, but the character voices must be unique. In third person, the author has more opportunity to open up the story and allow the reader to see the action from different “angles.” Talking to my Thomas Nelson editors once, I learned they like third person because of the versatility where sometimes first person can […]

The Power of Point of View Part 2
The Power of Point of View Part 1
Continuing on our “Hero’s Journey” today we’re going to talk about Point of View. Why is point of view important, and how does it effectively help or harm our work? Today I’m going to talk about “why” and tomorrow I’ll go into “how” of POV. First, for any newbies, WELCOME to MyBookTherapy! Glad to have you. Join Voices and hang out on the forums for interactive writing help. Second, the acronym POV stands for Point of View. Point of View – what is it? It’s the view or perspective of the protagonist or secondary characters. Perhaps the story view of the hero or the heroine. There are several types of point of view writing. Read the RestVoices of Reason and Passion!
The voice of Passion lives in my house. She’s dressed like my teenage daughter (on any given day that might be a pair of jeans, topped with a skirt, with a tank top under a short sleeved sweatshirt, and a pair of what my husband calls, her Wonder Woman arm protectors). Now, to be fair, my daughter has long moments of what I call sanity, where reason prevails, when I can convince her that no, her brothers aren’t trying to drive her crazy, even though they insist on leaving the bathroom…well, you know. And then there are the moments when passion takes over. When, despite our best efforts, life is simply too much, when she must play her music at the top of the allowed decibel levels, when, to put […]
Read the RestThe Big Reveal in Backstory
So you’ve whet your reader’s appetite with just the right amount of bread crumbs to lead them into the story. They knew, basically, that there is a dark secret in your hero’s past, a good reason why he needs to fight the dragon, or climb the mountain. So…when do you reveal the secret? I love HG TV….it’s sort of an addiction, I agree, but HG TV tells me that I CAN fix up my house, I CAN be an interior designer. (regardless of the truth!) I especailly love the show where they go into a really ugly room, and fix it up based on the stuff they have around the house (like Design ReMix). However, every HG TV show is the same…they present the problem, they show how they’ll fix […]
