The Power of Point of View Part 1

Continuing on our “Hero’s Journey” today we’re going to talk about Point of View. Why is point of view important, and how does it effectively help or harm our work? Today I’m going to talk about “why” and tomorrow I’ll go into “how” of POV. First, for any newbies, WELCOME to MyBookTherapy! Glad to have you. Join Voices and hang out on the forums for interactive writing help. Second, the acronym POV stands for Point of View. Point of View – what is it? It’s the view or perspective of the protagonist or secondary characters. Perhaps the story view of the hero or the heroine. There are several types of point of view writing. Handling Back story Paul’s way

This week we’re going to be talking about back story. What is back story, you ask? It’s the history of your characters. Past events, family, career, friendships, you name it. Now this was back in, well, another decade, and things like this weren’t classified as they are now. I sort of understood how and why it was happening, but had no clue how to get rid of it. Except Jesus. One of the side […]

Choosing the Point of View Character

I hope everyone is enjoying this weeks discussion on Scenes and Sequels. Part of a great scene is seeing the action, and hearing the dialog through the point of view character. When you’re getting ready to write a scene, it’s important to consider from whose eyes and ears are we looking and listening. Of course, if you’re writing in first person with a single character view, the decision is made for you. But, if your story has multiple points of view, pause to consider which character will tell the scene best. Choose the character that has the most to lose. Here’s an example. In Love Starts With Elle, the book I just finished for Thomas Nelson, I’d written a scene from Elle’s point of view because from the beginning of […]
