Declaration of Independence Part 3: When Freedom is Threatened

During the last two weeks, you have learned a lot about your freedom to pursue your dream of being an author. I would love to be able to tell you that your newfound freedom will never be challenged. I’d be lying and you’d be unprepared. Just as our nation faces enemies who hate our freedom, you will have those who are jealous of you. When they see you moving forward, pounding the keyboard, pitching your story and landing a contract, they will target you as the recipient if their emotional bombshells. Expect it. Prepare for it. Survive it and in spite of those attacks, keep living your dream. Just as our great nation has survived—and thrived—every threat and attack against it, you have what it takes to do the same. […]

Seven Things Every Writer Must Do, Part Six: Add Value to Others

I love to encourage others. To motivate them and help point them to success. At the end of the day, if I’ve added value to someone, I feel fulfilled. For me to see a writer who is discouraged, afraid or lacking self confidence is like saying “sick-umm” to a bull dog. I’m all over it.  You might say I jump on the opportunity because God gave me the gift of encouragement. While that is true, it wouldn’t work if I didn’t believe it. But, fortunately, I do believe in the human spirit and how much it can achieve. And I truly want to see everyone live up to their potential. To live their dream.  Think of children. When they are faced with an unfamiliar task, they may be timid. They […]

Seven Things Every Writer Must Do, Part Four: Learn to Dance in The Rain

In my office, I have a framed quote that constantly reminds me life is not the absence of challenges, disappointments and unexpected twists. Those who succeed don’t avoid those storms, but rather learn to find the good in them. They learn to dance in the rain.   As a writer, you’ll be faced with all sorts of storms. What you do with those storms will determine your future more than the storms themselves. So how do you learn to dance? Let’s take a look.   Dancing in the Rain in a choice. You have little or no control over most of the storms in life. But you do have complete control over how you react to them. It’s true. I’m writing this on the airplane while traveling to the […]

Seven Things Every Writer Must Do, Part Three: Remove Roadblocks

I’ve worked helping people maneuver past obstacles for most of my adult life. I’ve heard thousands of stories from men and women whose journeys came to halt because obstacles blocked their path. Over the years I learned many things about these roadblocks that will help you as a writer to remove them from your life. Here are a few of them.   Roadblocks are rarely insurmountable. It’s true. Even those precision positioning of police cruisers to stop fleeing crooks. In fact, one reasons cops don’t use roadblocks much anymore is because the bad guy can maneuver past them. The same applies to your writing journey. When a roadblock shows up in the middle of your path, remember there is a way around it, over it, or through it. Remember that […]
