A Love Affair with Your Dream, Part One: Once is Not Enough

I once heard a story of a woman who felt her husband of thirty years no longer loved her. For weeks she worked up the courage to confront her mate. Finally she broached the subject. When she accused him of failing love, her husband’s eyes flew open wide and his jaw dropped. “I told you I loved you when we got married,” he defended. “If I ever change my mind, I’ll let you know.” That might work in some remote corner of the universe, but definitely not in our galaxy, and especially not in the Valentine’s Day month. In order for the flame of love to stay alive, you must nurture it. Fan the flame. Tell your lover and show them in tangible ways every day that they are in […]

Commitment: Your Key to Success Part Four: Believe in Yourself

What’s belief got to do with commitment? In a word, EVERYTHING! God designed our heart and mind to only commit to that which we believe in. If we believe in our ability as a writer, we’ll commit to it. If not, we’ll run from it. Simple as that. Here’s the truth. If you were not a writer, you would not be reading this article. It doesn’t contain jaw dropping, heart stopping, gotta-turn-the-page material. It’s not a New York Times best seller. Its literary magnificence can’t be the reason you’ve made it these hundred words. No, you’re hoping to gain insight to help you reach your goals as a writer. I believe in you. I believe in your dream. But I’m not the one who’s under the gun in your dream. […]

Make 2012 Count, Part 3: the Rent’s Due on the First

Let’s face it. There are a few people in the world who internally drive themselves toward their desired goals. The rest of us just aren’t wired that way. If we don’t have a deadline, chances are we won’t finish the project. Repeat after me: Deadlines are my friends. They will keep you with your patooty in the seat and your fingers on the keyboard. You have so many distractions in today’s world, without deadlines, you’ll never get where you want to be. Think about it. Your rent or mortgage payment is due on the 1st. Because you know that, your purchases throughout the month are made with that in mind. You can’t afford to not have a roof over your head so you are diligent with your finances. The same […]

Make 2012 Count, Part Two: On the Chopping Block

I’m sure that in the last seven days, you set several goals. Some of those you feel confident you can achieve. Others appear to be quite a stretch. It’s like trying to run a marathon on hot coals with no shoes. No way in blazes you’ll finish that race. Don’t worry. There is hope, so keep reading. Now comes the fun part. You get to throw each of those goals on the chopping block and whack away. The intent is not to destroy those goals you worked so hard last week to set, but rather to chop them up into manageable pieces. You wouldn’t think of putting an entire tree trunk in the fireplace all at once. Neither should you think of doing that with your goals. You have to […]
